What’s Underneath?

As micro-business owners, we so often focus on the faces our businesses (websites, newsletter design, physical space if you have one) and, of course, creating, refining and marketing our offerings.  In other words – we focus on what the client sees, experiences and receives.  It’s critical that we do so!

Equally critical but routinely neglected, though, are the tools and the systems behind the scenes that support those client experiences:  scheduling systems, our computers, how we keep track of contact information, email marketing programs, how people reach us to make an appointment, calendars, how we get paid and how well we keep track of those payments… and so much more.

We neglect them because we find them boring, kind of unsexy, perhaps confusing.  But those tools and systems together make up the foundation of your business, and we all know what happens when there’s a crack in the foundation.

Foundation is capacity:  what volume of business am I capable of handling?  How well am I serving my current clients?  Can I serve more just as well?  In turning our attention to capacity, we allow for more meaningful connections, more successful client relationships, and growth, beyond what we might imagine today.  And THAT notion, dear friends, is definitely not boring, pretty sexy and clear as day.  Right?

So, tell me, readers:

  • What is one behind-the-scenes area of your business that you know needs attention?
  • And, share one thing that is working really well for you.  If it’s a resource that others might find useful, tell us its name!

I’m looking into what I’m going to use for tracking payments. And one thing that’s working well is the calendar system that I use (both for scheduling my days and scheduling my blog posts).

I am going to be focusing on email marketing and creating joint partnerships. The area that I am forever grateful for setting up that was yucky to think about was developing a book keeping system for the businesses. There is nothing more satisfying than turning boxes of papers and receipts into a streamlines and efficient office. Haaahhaaaaa!

Ooooh, book-keeping – great one, Monica! Such a huge bore but oh-so-wonderful when you’ve established a system and don’t have to think about it anymore.

Hahaha! I don’t think I have any systems in place behind the scenes! This post has made me realise that I need to get clearer on them and get them working well. My do it as it arises approach is not going to serve me in the long run.
